Confession Time: I'm Mad

I know nothing about the book from which Goodreads helpfully pulled the quote which towers above your page, but I do know that according to it, I must be British. See, I suffer from a distinct madness called Leaping Before I Look. It's part of my ENFP personality type, I know. The Inspirer: we see potential everywhere, in everything and everyone. We're probably most susceptible to plot bunnies, starting stories we don't finish, and generally sitting, like Daisy March, wearing a benevolent smile and announcing,
"Me wuvs evvybody!"
Thankfully, I've managed to more or less curb that impulse to "abandon stories in favor of a fresher idea". I hope to be a good mother someday. I've got to learn to see things through, right? Just so. But the bug called Inspiration bites me frequently and sometimes I careen past Caution, Sense, Logic, and the street-corner called Informed Consumer and thoroughly embrace an opportunity. It's a loveable failing, but a definite failing.

Last November I felt in a mood to write a short story and, because I don't like to write things that won't see the light of day, I did a quick Google-search on story-writing contests. In my delvings, I found an "essay contest" for an inspirational magazine. The essays requested were something along the lines of a letter from your one-hundred year-old self to yourself now. The idea was odd, struck my fancy, and produced something written in a fit of the writing-wiggles called "The Secret To Red Lipstick". Happily, there was no entry fee for this particular contest and the only thing I had to risk was rejection. If I was accepted, there was a $2,500 prize in view. I sent the thing in and literally forgot it. In January I happened to sort through my Google Drive files and see the essay. I read it over, recalled vaguely that I had entered some contest with it and never heard back, and closed the file and the memory. A few weeks later, I received an email in my inbox from a man of whom I'd never heard. When I read the thing, I was made to understand that the man in question was the editor-in-chief from Fountain Magazine (the contest-host). He wrote to inform me that he had discussed matters with his colleagues and, though my essay had not placed in the contest, they intended to publish "The Secret To Red Lipstick" in the next issue of Fountain. Thinking this was rather an unexpected and curious turn of events (and furthermore, having been reminded of the name of the publication to which I had submitted my piece), I decided to Google the magazine and see what sort of banner my words would fly under.
In a moment I was a puddle of laughter, dismay, tears, and hilarity on my bed while my sister looked on in some small concern. Dear reader, Fountain Magazine is a primarily Islamic publication focusing on science, literature, art, and inspirational fiction. I believe I am probably the only outspokenly-Christian writer who could accidentally land herself a gig in a Muslim magazine. After my initial shock and awe, I sent a few emails back and forth with the editor, discussing whether I was the best match for the magazine's goals, the fact that when I entered, I had accepted the small-print detail (who reads those?) that I had given the magazine permission to publish my story. We also discussed the fact that since my faith was so important to me, I would be given special permission to mention my religious affiliation in my bio-blurb. The editor was fantastically courteous, understanding, easy-going, and respectful and what had initially been a "what the heck?!" moment for me became a lesson learned. I had not researched the publication to which I was submitting my work. I did not read the Terms & Conditions. I had done absolutely nothing in the way of approaching the thing as a mature adult, and yet it ended up being a good experience. Why? Because of another person who did act like a mature person.



I learned that one must always take time to research, to learn the audience, and to be certain that one's work would be a good fit. But more importantly, I learned that there are ways to solve differences without compromising ground. The day I received the package with my copies of the issue of Fountain in which my article appeared (and my check), was a proud day for me. The layout was beautiful. My words were my own. And they had appeared, professionally laid-out and paid-for in an international magazine despite my lack of foresight. Hearken to this advice, chillens: do your research. But keep in mind that sometimes the mad-man wins in spite of his own idiocy.

News About Cottleston Pie

This idea is quite appropriate for me when it comes to writing stories. I am a visionary. I get excited over a story, I start writing the story, and I get so terribly caught up in the delight of new words and characters and places that I announce the story. And then I realize that I was ill-prepared to tackle the task in the time in which I said I would do it, and I go off to crash and burn. This is why I've never participated in NaNo (National Novel Writing Month). If November was not the month cram-jammed with family birthdays and occasions, I would probably be tempted yearly. But I know myself well enough at this point to know that I could not promise (or fulfill the promise) to write that much every single day without losing sanity or writing cheap prose for the sake of a word count.

A little while ago I announced that I was writing a Christmas story, tentatively titled: Ring the Belles. It was meant to be finished in time to be given to a family member for a Christmas present. As I wrote, I realized that the story was not working in the era in which it was set...the tone is autobiographical and thus a bit too rollicking for the Regency Era setting. As I discussed this issue with fellow author Meghan Gorecki, she suggested I move the story to a different continent, where a slack tone of unconcealed dryness, wit, and raillery would not be unacceptable. I could keep my era, keep my plot, and keep the tone with this solution. Unfortunately, the idea of packing up the entirely 10k words and rewriting them on a new continent overwhelmed me. I had only a few days before my brother's wedding and I could not stomach the idea. So I shut down Ring the Belles till after the wedding. When I came back to writing this week, I was just not feeling a Christmas story. I did not feel much like writing at all, so I sat on my bed and did a few quick pen/watercolor sketches of the main characters in Cottleston Pie.

 

I don't know why they were stuck in my head, but they were and as I drew them and looked at these characters who are so well known to me, I realized what I really felt like doing was finishing Cottleston Pie. The Christmas story can wait. I have added six or seven-thousand words this week and am running along merrily toward a wrap-up. I intend to pitch this book as a short-novel for Young Readers (ages 8-12). The finished length will be about 25,000 words, with the option to chop the book into single picture books if need be. 
The deal is this: I do not want to publish Cottleston Pie on my own. It needs illustrations. It needs people who know what they are doing. People have said that I should illustrate the books myself, but I know nothing of illustration. I can draw, but I am unskilled in knowing how to transfer that into a digital form and transfer that into a layout and print it and anything else of that nature. This book is not for the indie-published. Of course down the road if I cannot find a publisher to take Cottleston Pie, I will probably do it myself, but I hope to be able to find a company that will publish these stories. They have a wider appeal than some things I plan to write, and I do think they could become beloved. I will be querying traditional publishing houses as soon as I have finished the first draft. I really hope something comes from this.
There is one publishing house especially that I would love to take it...it doesn't help to know that almost nobody gets their book taken by the first house to whom they pitch it. All the same...this company sounds amazing. I'll definitely be following their projects even if mine isn't among them.

So maybe I'm announcing yet another weapon before I've fired it (LIPSTICK TASER!) but I decided I'd tell you now: I'm looking for a big-girl publisher for Cottleston Pie. Proceed as usual.

So the King gave Simpian his pen-knife and told him that, yes, he could have the pen-knife and yes, it was sharp, but no, he was not allowed to hurt anyone with it and if he did that yes, the King would have Words with him. What Words? Stern ones, and holy Moly, my boy, it was a foolish person who would volunteer himself to hear Stern Words from a King of his callipiller, so Simpian had better not try or he’d see what was what. And a peck of pears with green olives.
Whatever that meant.

Being a Hybrid-Author: Inside Scoop on Both Publishing Worlds

By early June this year, I will be a hybrid-published author. What does that term even mean? It means that I will have at least one project in print by independent means (Fly Away Home) and at least one project in print by traditional methods (Five Glass Slippers). In an age where services like Createspace offer ways for an author to see her book become a bound, printed reality, is traditional publishing being edged out toward becoming unnecessary? In a conversation on Twitter, author J. Grace Pennington suggested I do one blog post centering on the pros and cons of each form of publishing for anyone curious to see the publishing business from both sides. To that end, I've constructed this post to walk through the writing-publishing process and give you the drift from both sides: traditional and indie pubbing:

Step One: Write the Darned Thing

Indie authors: Write what you like. No one really has to love this book but you.
Traditional authors: Write what you like. Someone has to love this book besides you, but we'll worry about that later.

Step Two: Editing/Rewriting

Indie authors: Get as many people as you can to read this book and point out all your errors. Fix these errors and rework it thrice or four times.
Traditional authors: Get at least three people to read your book and help you edit. Critique partners work well for this stage. Rewrite with an eye for your target audience.

Between Stages two and three, if you are a traditionally published author, will be the querying and/or contest winning stage wherein you will secure a publisher for your book. Here, the paths of the two diverge.

Step Three: Further Editing
Indie authors: Keep at that editing. The measure of honor in an indie-pubbed novel is how well it is edited. The fear of most readers in buying an indie novel is that it will look and sound homemade. Uh-uh.
Traditional authors: You will receive a line-in edit for your novel at this stage wherein are notes from your editor/publisher about Things That Need Fixing. This could be the addition of scenes in certain places, the cutting of dialect or certain lines of dialog, the changing of the ending, the changing of names, the clarification of relationships, the news that Google actually doesn't know Italian. Make these changes in the file and send back to the Editor. This could need to be repeated once or twice more, depending on your aptitude in making requested changes.

Step Four: Design/Formatting
Indie authors: Hire a cover-designer unless you happen to be super with digital art. I cannot stress this point enough. The other measure of honor in an indie novel is whether it actually looks like something someone would pick up without being begged on bended knee. This is also the formatting stage. You will need to decide if you are doing an e-book version of your novel and then format the novel into paperback and ebook formats. If you're awesome, you will do a lot with interior design. If you are not like me, you will make it look professional and breathe again when it is finished. This is the stage where you begin your project in Createspace and make decisions like Glossy or Matte, Cream or White, and the size of your pages (all of which, in some measure, has bearing on the formatting and design). When you've done formatting, you'll upload your final PDF and correct all the problems the Format-Checker found. You'll upload the Final FINAL PDF and order a proof copy. When you've received your proof copy, it's time to sit down with a red pencil and circle all the spelling, punctuation, or formatting mistakes you've still found after a bajillion edits on the computer. When you've applied these edits (and/or found and fixed design problems) go ahead and approve the proof!
Traditional authors: This stage is, perhaps, the reason so many authors love the traditional method. You have to do absolutely nothing except (in some cases) approve/advise the cover design, admire the gorgeous interior design file that finally makes it your way, and check through the galley proof file for any last-minute changes you will make. The one difference is that sometimes there are a few lines (insignificant lines) that are not absolutely your own. Slight words changed, or a simple "she walked down the stairs" inserted here or there. If you think too hard about it, it can irk the One Who Published Indie And Kept Everything, but it is how every traditionally published book works. There are certain little changes the editor is entitled to make.

Step Five: Marketing/Publicity
Indie authors: This is the stage that will decide whether you are actually going to make it as an author or not. That sound scary, I know, but it is really quite practical. You'll need to build your platform (a blog is an excellent way--kudos if you already have one), email every writing-inclined person in your address book and beg for interviews, email book review sites and beg they'll accept an e-ARC (Advance Reader Copy), schedule interviews and guest posts, join Goodreads and create an Amazon author profile, figure out what the blazes Shelfari is and then discard it as a bad idea, and choose your release date. You'll probably be majorly stressed in this stage, but when it is over and your release-party and/or blog tour is spinning merrily without you, it feels so good. I haven't gotten into the stage of arranging newspaper interviews or television spots or anything, but you can certainly win hearts that way, I'm sure. Talk about your work, not in a narcissistic way, but as your profession, which it is. Show people your work. Run giveaways and host other authors on your blog. Join Twitter and Facebook as a way to connect with more readers. Be real and personal and embrace your brief moment of glamour. Work hard. It's worth it.
Traditional authors: Read above paragraph. Yep. Increasingly, the job of marketing and publicity rests much upon the shoulders of the author. Gone are the days of letting your publisher do everything for you. As the author, you are the one readers want to know. They want to hear your words, see bits of your writing process and life. They want the real deal and publishers are okay with that. The author can't expect to leave the best interest of their children in the hands of someone who didn't give birth to that child and expect them to carry it the entire life of the novel, right? That's like ... creepy.

So there you have it, world! The pros/cons and paradoxes of being a hybrid author!
